inFORM Studio designs winning Providence Pedestrian Bridge to replace I-195 Bridge

 Mayor David N. Cicilline has announced that the design submitted by inFORM Studio in association with the engineering firm Buro Happold has been selected as the winner of the Providence Pedestrian Bridge Design Competition. inFORM Studio, whose website states that the firm takes an environmentally sustainable approach to every project, is an award-winning design-based practice with offices in Michigan, New York and South Carolina.

Forms for a children’s hospital inspired by the process of cell division

A new destination dedicated to the health and healing of China’s children will soon appear in the Yangtze Delta Region. The concept for the design of Suzhou Children’s Hospital was inspired by the human body’s natural way of growing and healing: the process of mitosis, or cell division. The hospital’s form mimics the telophase of cell division, when the most complex, flexible, efficient and routine processes occur. This creates an overall building shape that is flexible and efficient, as well as conducive to the most complex and routine patient care activities, healthcare research and educational opportunities.

Tilted hotel and conference centre by 3XN opens in Copenhagen

 Leaning an incredible 15 degrees in opposite directions, the twin towers of the Bella Sky Hotel in Copenhagen’s Ørestad region have become the subject of fervent excitement since its opening on the 16th May. Whilst architectural journalists and PR reps the world over continue to slap the term ‘landmark’ onto any new sculptural construction, this monument is truly deserving of the title.

Rising up on the edge of a commercial precinct, the prongs of the Bella Sky Hotel rise 76.5m into the sky, branching off from one another in a graceful arch so recognisable that Arne Bang Mikkelsen, Director of the Bella Center concludes: “We have decided not to add any signage on the exterior.”
